AmeriCorps invests about a billion dollars per year to support around 200,000 AmeriCorps members serving in 40,000 locations across the country. For example, AmeriCorps partners with various organizations like Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity to address local challenges and provide human capital solutions.
AmeriCorps also collaborates with other federal agencies and state commissions to shape policy and make a real impact on national and local levels. They focus on evidence-based models and aim to provide opportunities for AmeriCorps members to gain valuable skills and experiences.
AmeriCorps actively recruits and engages young people, including Gen Z-ers, by highlighting the personal benefits they can receive, such as education awards and new experiences.
They also want to prioritize the member experience and ensure equity in their programs, as they are committed to diversity and serving low-income communities. Michael discusses the importance of addressing barriers that prevent certain individuals from serving in AmeriCorps in order to promote diversity.
After asking about different types of engagement and how people can get involved, Michael explains that AmeriCorps offers various programs, including direct service work in schools, community centers, and food banks, poverty alleviation work through AmeriCorps VISTA, and deployments across the country through AmeriCorps NCCC. He also mentions opportunities for seniors over 55. Michael emphasizes that AmeriCorps offers part-time positions and customizable slots, making it accessible for individuals with different commitments and interests.
He mentions the Fit Finder tool on the AmeriCorps website, which helps individuals find opportunities that align with their interests. Michael assures listeners that AmeriCorps covers a wide range of areas, such as solar, housing, the opioid epidemic, and nutrition, and encourages them to visit AmeriCorps.gov to apply for grants or find local nonprofits to partner with.
In closing, Michael expresses his gratitude for the spirit of service in America and believes in the power of AmeriCorps to make a positive impact. He urges listeners to consider serving with AmeriCorps or finding funding to support meaningful work in their communities.
