10 Transformative Lessons from Hosting 150+ Episodes

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of hosting Find Your Cause, a podcast by Greater Than Zero Percent (GTZP), where leaders (mostly in the nonprofit space) share their stories and lessons. After 150+ episodes, I’ve compiled the ten most powerful lessons that inspire change and build hope. These lessons are paired with quotes from the incredible individuals and organizations we hade the privilege to speak with. Thank you all for a wonderful 2024. Cheers to the next one!

1. Empathy is the Foundation of Change

"Empathy isn’t just a feeling; it’s a tool for connection."Ibrahim Maali, Executive Director of Solidarity Studios. They use the universal language of music to amplify untold stories and bridge divides,

Why This Matters: In a polarized world, empathy allows us to connect across cultures, religions, and socioeconomic divides. It creates spaces for understanding and collaboration, enabling solutions that resonate with everyone involved. Empathy isn’t just about listening; it’s about acting on what you hear.

2. Resilience is Built Through Collaboration

"Resilience isn’t born in isolation; it grows in communities that support one another."Terry Liggins, MPA, Founder of Hurdle Life Coach Foundation . Terry’s work in preventing intergenerational trauma shows that when communities come together, they create stronger, more adaptable individuals and families.

Why This Matters: Resilience is vital for overcoming adversity, especially in communities facing systemic challenges. Collaborative efforts—whether through nonprofits, local organizations, or families—build networks of support that create lasting change.

3. Purpose Transforms Lives

"Every dream begins with a single step, and it’s in those steps we find our purpose."Nancy Economou, Founder and CEO of Watts of Love. Watts of Love provides sustainable solar lights to communities without electricity, demonstrating how purpose-driven work can illuminate lives.

Why This Matters: Purpose is a powerful motivator. When people are connected to a cause that aligns with their values, they unlock creativity, resilience, and drive. On a global scale, purpose-driven initiatives tackle issues like poverty, education, and environmental sustainability.

4. Small Acts Spark Big Changes

"Planting a seed isn’t about immediate results; it’s about cultivating the future."Sebastian White, Founder of The Evolved Network NFP. Sebastian’s urban gardening initiatives show how small steps—like planting a seed—lead to food sustainability and community well-being.

Why This Matters: Micro-level actions can lead to macro-level change. Whether it’s reducing food deserts or combating climate change, the ripple effect of small actions can address systemic issues on a global scale.

5. Connection is a Catalyst for Healing

"Healing starts when you create a space where people can safely share their truth."Joseph Mapp, Reentry Case Manager at Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation. Jojo’s work focuses on restorative justice circles, bringing together individuals and communities to foster understanding, accountability, and healing after trauma or conflict.

Why This Matters: Restorative justice shows that healing isn’t about punishment—it’s about rebuilding trust and relationships. By prioritizing connection and dialogue, we create pathways for individuals to reintegrate into their communities and make positive contributions to society. On a global level, this approach has the power to transform cycles of harm into opportunities for growth and unity.

6. Representation Matters at Every Level

"True leadership is about creating space for others to see themselves in positions of power."Erica Chomsky, Founder of Culture Aid NOLA. Culture Aid NOLA empowers local leaders to address food insecurity and community needs through culturally responsive programs.

Why This Matters: Representation ensures that diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making, leading to more equitable solutions. By amplifying marginalized voices, we create a world where leadership reflects the communities it serves.

7. Youth Are the Architects of Innovation

"Helping kids stay engaged in sports builds confidence and keeps their dreams alive."Jasmine Peterson Hodari, Co-Founder All Kids Play. Jasmine’s work keeps youth focused on sports and education, proving that positive engagement unlocks their full potential.

Why This Matters: Youth represent untapped potential. By investing in their creativity and resilience, we prepare the next generation to tackle complex global challenges with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.

8. Stories Break Down Barriers

"When we celebrate differences, we enrich humanity."Carol CC Miller, Founder of Positive Focus. Carol’s work highlights the power of storytelling to foster empathy and collaboration across diverse communities.

Why This Matters: Stories humanize complex issues. By sharing experiences, we foster understanding and inspire collective action. In a world that often feels divided, storytelling serves as a bridge to connection and unity.

9. Collaboration Amplifies Impact

"Transforming urban green spaces benefits communities and combats climate change."Jon Hoekstra, Executive Director of Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. Jon’s initiatives turn neglected areas into thriving ecosystems, showing the power of partnerships in urban renewal.

Why This Matters: Collaboration multiplies resources, expertise, and reach. When individuals, organizations, and governments work together, they address challenges too vast for any one entity, achieving results that are truly transformative.

10. Hope is the Most Powerful Catalyst

"Beautiful resistance is the belief that fighting for justice is an act of humanity."Abdelfattah Abusrour, Founder of Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society. Abdelfattah’s belief in hope fuels his community’s fight for justice and dignity in the face of adversity.

Why This Matters: Hope sustains action. Even in the darkest times, hope inspires movements that change lives. On a global scale, hope keeps us striving for solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Hosting Find Your Cause has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. These lessons remind us that change starts with action—no matter how small—and that we are stronger together.
