She Quit to Give Kids With Disabilities a Team | Open Door Sports

Sarah Albus was a college soccer player at Vanderbilt, a mom of four, and completely done with her first career when her daughter Hannah, born at 25 weeks with cerebral palsy and visual impairment, asked where her skis were.

That question changed everything.

In this episode, Sarah shares how she launched Open Door Sports in 2017 with no nonprofit experience, how six schools said yes before she had the staff to serve them, and why the most powerful outcome of her work wasn't the sports at all.

Mission

Open Door Sports is dedicated to providing free quality sports programs, positive experiences, and community building opportunities for individuals with special needs and their peer buddy volunteers. We believe in creating positive experiences and fostering community connections through sports.

About

Open Door Sports (ODS) was founded in 2017 to provide high quality, high energy sports programs to kids who are often missed - those with intellectual or physical disabilities. In 2021, aware of the incredibly high cost of raising a neurodivergent child, ODS transitioned all of its programs to free of charge. In 2024, ODS recognized that our players were growing with us and expanded its offerings to include young adults, ages 18 - 26, so they could continue their community building journey through sports and healthy activity. ODS combines a high level of coaching focused on skill development, teamwork and fun with the community building opportunities that are intrinsic to team sports. Friendships are developed and bonds are made…not only between our players but also with our peer buddy volunteers. ODS has grown from serving 14 players in one program in the spring of 2017 to currently serving nearly 700 kids and young adults with disabilities annually through a variety of sports programs, Changemaker Club activities, and competitive Game Day offerings. ODS was created to give all kids and young adults the opportunity to play, regardless of perceived intellectual or physical ability, and we work and live this mission every day.
