Code Platoon transforms veterans and military spouses into professional software developers through an immersive, hands-on, educational process and paid internship program.
Veteran unemployment rates can be 50% higher than the national average. Code Platoon is a 501(c)3 non-profit that helps veterans and military spouses transition into the civilian workforce by providing technical training and career placement. For 15 weeks the students are immersed in learning the full web development stack, including Python (or Ruby), Django (or Rails), JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Immersive coding boot camps give students opportunity to learn by doing in a collaborative environment. Many hours are spent coding, applying the principles taught in the lectures. Working together on teams to solve complex code challenges simulates the real-world work experience which ultimately increases the likelihood of employment. Code Platoon is achieving their mission through being affordable, not requiring prior experience, challenging assumptions surrounding both veterans and coding, and raising awareness for veteran unemployment. About 80% of Code Platoon's graduates are still employed, making a starting salary of about $72,000.
